Due to NCAA recruiting regulations, it all depends on if you are a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in high school.

In this three part series, we will discuss when coaches can contact you and what you can do to get in touch with them based on each division and class year.

Sophomores

Division I:

Mailing recruiting materials- College coaches may only send you recruiting questionnaires and brochures about the college or football camps.

Visits- You may go on as many unofficial visits as you want. This means you can visit the college at your own expense and get a good feel for that particular college. Official visits, Any visit to a college campus by you and your parents paid for by the college, are Not allowed.

Phone calls- You can call the coach, recruiting coordinator, or assistant coaches as much as you want. If the coach answers the call, you may have a conversation. However, if the coach misses your phone call, he may not call you back. College coaches may not call you or text you if you are a sophomore.

Email- You may email the college coach as much as you want and this is highly recommended.

Off campus contact- There is no off campus contact allowed. This means that you and your parents may not have a face to face contact with the college coach off of the college campus.

You have been performing well on the high school field and now you want to know when you will start to hear from college coaches about playing for their programs! The first thing you will have to know about hearing from coaches is that they can not contact you personally until your junior year, as NCAA recruiting rules restrict any written correspondence between coaches and athletes before their junior year.

Coaches can only send you non-athletic program information such as; a college summer camp brochure, a recruiting questionnaire, and educational information about the University only. You may email, send letters, and call as much as you want as this is highly recommended. This persistence shows your interest in the program and drive to become noticed as a quality athlete.
*An important thing to keep in mind is that there is no restriction on college coaches conversing with high school coaches.

On September 1st of your junior year college coaches can begin to send you written correspondence regarding recruiting. Coaches have the choice of sending you either a media guide or recruiting brochure. Now coaches can communicate with you via email, letters, fax and even text messaging.

At any time are you or your parents able to initiate calls to college coaches. If however you leave a message, you may be calling each other back and forth due to conflicting schedules. Do not let this discourage you as your perseverance and determination are what have taken you this far, and will carry you on for the coming years of college.

Some more rules from the NCAA
-You can not receive phone calls from NCAA Division I coaches until July 1st between your Junior and Senior years.
-You can however receive one call in May of your Junior year from any institution
-Regarding Division II schools: a coach can contact you on June 15th prior to your Senior year.
-Regarding Division III: A coach can initiate a phone call immediately after the completion of your junior year.
